Disturbances to Complex Engineering Systems
This workshop reviewed a typology of types of disturbances that can affect complex engineered systems that is currently being developed through an ENCORE feasibility study.
Participants were invited to consider the nature of different disturbances and their nteractions over time – both between disturbances and the engineering systems they affect, and between multiple disturbances acting simultaneously.
Key issues of interest included:
How different types of disturbances are included in complexity models
Interactions between exogenous and endogenous disturbances
The meaning of resilience in the light of different disturbances
Possible changes in the set of disturbances affecting CESs, driven by long-term technological and environmental global trends
The agenda for the day can be found below:
12:00– 12:30 Arrivals. Tea/coffee/light lunch.
12:30– 13:15 Introduction: The purpose of the study and its scope. Basic terminology and assumptions used, methodology used. Draft version of the typology.
13:15– 14:30 Typology review: In groups, review the typology through reviewing five questions:
Q1: Do the criteria and dimensions look reasonable? Are there any obvious omissions or inconsistencies?
Q2: For each named type, are there any examples of when it has been seen to have had an effect on CES?
Q3: If there are any types for which no examples can be thought of, is this because they are unrealistic, or because CES have been resilienced against this type.
Q4: Have any of the types been seen to happen in combination with each other? Have there been interactions between exogenous and endogenous disturbances?
Q5: Which categories are likely to become more significant in future due to trends such as automation, AI, digitisation, climate change, population increases, etc?
14:30– 15:00 Tea/coffee break
15:00-16:00 Wrap up: presentations of the typology reviews by each group to the rest of the workshop. General discussion, final thoughts, plans for future work, relevance for users of the typology.
